Essays...

"Essays..."
I recently had to write my first essay since high school. I hated them in high school, and I hate them more now. University essays are just no fun at all. Starting them is the hardest part...

What is a Cinemagraph?

Often when I mention cinemagraphs in conversation, I will get pulled up - "Cinemagraph?! What's that?"

Cinemagraphs are still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinemagraph

A cinemagraph is very much a combination of a still picture and an animated GIF.

Cinemagraphs have an immobile frame of reference, just like a still picture, but they also have animated sections, like an animated GIF.

A simple phrase I like to explain cinemagraphs: "Moving photos"

Nokia Cinemagraph

"Lake Ginninderra"

I recently found an app on my Nokia Lumia 720 (WP8), called 'Nokia Cinemagraph.' Curious, I tested it out at Canberra's Lake Ginninderra. It would ask you to hold the phone still while it takes a video, then it will allow you to "colour in" the parts that you want to be animated in the final cinemagraph.

It seems to work decently, but it is a bit laggy. As you can see, there is a bit of a jerk at the end of the gif, which completely destroys the peaceful scene. Otherwise, it has a few nifty features, and if you were interested in cinemagraphs, but not ready to tackle the whole procedure in an image editing software, this would be a good start.
